In 1947, due to the city’s expansion, many people were forced out of their homes. Few homes were available. Mrs. Leona Daniels had to move out to the suburbs, which at that time was known as “Royal Terrace”.
The concern Mrs. Daniels had for her church, its Pastors, and members made her want them to enjoy the fine qualities she had discovered. She began to arrange a program to be presented at the church. After much prayer and consideration, the service was presented under the name “The Noble Neighborhood’s Program”. Eventually, Mrs. Daniels decided to rename the program “Leona Daniels Loyal Friends Program”. Realizing that in order to gain friends, one must show themselves friendly. Mrs. Daniels decided that the day of celebration would be named “Leona Daniels Day”. This observation would be held May 21, 1950.
Mrs. Daniels requested that this would be an annual affair during her life and as a memorial after her passing. All fundraised for that morning’s worship service would be used for the beautification of the church. The request was adopted and the affair continued under this process until 1955, when The Rev. Frank W. Jones, Sr. came in and granted Mrs. Daniels the liberty to use the entire day.
Mrs. Daniels made her transition to eternity on February 11, 2002. To list the numerous accomplishments the church has made as a result of her grand efforts would not be enough to address our gratefulness. Her family continues to fellowship with the church she loved so much and contributes to the memory of her mother to foster the upkeep and beautification of our beloved church.
